Retreat with artisan: Mosaic Retreat in Sicily

A five-day mosaic retreat in Sicily, where you learn to create Roman mosaics by hand, guided by a skilled artisan.

Overview

This immersive retreat offers a hands-on introduction to Roman mosaic techniques, guided by a skilled artisan.

Over five days, you’ll learn how to create a mosaic from scratch — working with raw materials while discovering the importance of dexterity, rhythm, and attention to detail. Through daily studio sessions, you’ll explore traditional methods of composing, cutting, and placing tesserae, developing your own mosaic piece step by step.

More than a technical workshop, this experience invites you to reconnect with your hands and rediscover the value of craftsmanship — understanding how true quality emerges through time, patience, and creative intention.

Immersive learning experience

Creative Italy retreats are designed as immersive creative journeys.

Each day includes approximately three hours of mosaic practice (outdoors or indoors depending on weather), guided directly by the artisan. Alongside studio work, curated visits to Roman villas connect your hands-on learning with historical masterpieces.

This experience encourages you to slow down, observe carefully, and allow place, history, and material to inform your creative process.

A personalised experience

This retreat is delivered one-to-one or in small groups and personalised according to each participant’s level.

Whether you are new to mosaic or already creatively engaged, the artisan adapts the programme to your skills and pace. You’ll receive close guidance throughout the process, supporting both technical learning and personal expression.

Destination: Val di Noto

Set in the Val di Noto, in southeastern Sicily, Italy, this retreat unfolds in a region rebuilt after the devastating 1693 earthquake as a masterpiece of late Baroque urban design.

The area includes historic cities such as Siracusa, Noto, Modica, Ragusa, and Scicli — all part of a UNESCO-listed cultural landscape.

As part of your learning journey, you’ll visit two extraordinary Roman mosaic sites: Villa del Tellaro and Villa Romana del Casale, gaining historical insight that deepens your understanding of the techniques you practice in the studio.
