Florentine Marbled Paper Course in Florence

Where colour becomes movement and pattern

A course dedicated to the art of marbled paper — where pigments, water, and gesture come together to create unique, fluid compositions.

Guided by expert artisans, you will learn how to transform color into intricate decorative patterns, mastering a technique that is both precise and unpredictable.

The Course

A Dialogue Between Color and Water.

This course introduces marbled paper as both a decorative craft and an expressive process.

Working on a liquid surface, you will learn how colors float, expand, and interact — guided by your movements and tools. Each creation is unique, shaped by balance between control and spontaneity.

From traditional Florentine patterns to experimental compositions, you will explore how to design and transfer motifs onto paper, creating one-of-a-kind pieces

The art behind the technique

The marbling technique originated in Asia around the 8th century, later spreading to Europe where it evolved into distinct regional traditions.

In Florence, it developed into a refined decorative art, particularly from the late 19th century, influenced by floral and organic motifs inspired by movements such as Art Nouveau.

Unlike printed patterns, marbled paper is created through a direct interaction between color and liquid — where each design is formed on the surface before being transferred onto paper.

Traditionally used in bookbinding, marbled paper has expanded into contemporary design, applied to objects, interiors, and artistic works. Today, it remains a living craft, preserved by artisans who continue to explore its endless creative possibilities — including historic workshops such as Il Papiro.
