Gilding Course in Florence
Where light becomes material
A course dedicated to the art of gilding — where gold leaf transforms surfaces into luminous compositions.
Guided by expert artisans, you will learn traditional techniques used for centuries in painting, decoration, and restoration, mastering the application of gold to enhance form, depth, and light.
The Course
Transforming Surfaces Through Gold.
This course introduces gilding as both a decorative and artistic technique.
Working with gold leaf, you will learn how to prepare surfaces, apply adhesive layers, and transfer delicate metal sheets onto wood and other supports.
From traditional water gilding to mission gilding, you will explore different approaches — understanding when and how each technique is used to achieve specific aesthetic effects.
The art behind the technique
Gilding has been a central element in art and decoration since the medieval period, particularly in Byzantine and Renaissance works.
Gold leaf was widely used in panel paintings to represent divine light, halos, and sacred spaces — giving artworks a luminous, almost immaterial quality.
One of the unique properties of gold is that it does not corrode, allowing gilded surfaces to retain their brilliance over centuries.
Traditional techniques such as water gilding (gouache gilding) have been practiced since the 13th century, requiring precise preparation and manual skill. Mission gilding later introduced more flexible applications, allowing artisans to work on smaller or more detailed areas.
Today, gilding remains a refined craft, bridging art, decoration, and restoration.

Beyond technique: the artisan mindset
Gilding is a discipline of precision and delicacy.
Working with gold leaf requires control, patience, and sensitivity — as even the smallest movement can affect the final result.
Through this process, you learn to work with light as a material, understanding how surfaces reflect, absorb, and transform it.
It is not only about decoration, but about creating presence — where material and light become one.
