Book Restoration Course in Florence
Where knowledge is preserved through craftsmanship
A course dedicated to the restoration of books, manuscripts, and works on paper — where history, material, and technique come together.
Guided by expert conservators, you will learn how to preserve and restore fragile documents, protecting both their physical form and cultural value.
The Course
Preserving Content, Respecting Material.
Book restoration is a discipline rooted in the preservation of knowledge.
This course introduces you to the principles of conservation and restoration, focusing on manuscripts, drawings, maps, and bound volumes. You will learn how to analyze each object, understand its structure, and intervene with care and precision.
From cleaning and repair to structural reinforcement, each step is guided by respect for the original material and its historical context.
The art behind the technique
The restoration of books and paper artifacts has evolved alongside the history of knowledge itself.
In early periods, damaged works were often copied rather than preserved. During the Renaissance, however, the rediscovery of classical texts led to a growing awareness of the importance of conservation.
By the 18th century, advances in chemistry introduced more refined restoration techniques, particularly for cleaning, stain removal, and ink recovery.
In the 20th century, the discipline was formalized through institutions such as the Central Institute for the Pathology of the Book, founded by Alfonso Gallo, which contributed to defining restoration as both a scientific and craft-based practice.
Today, books are understood as complex cultural artifacts — the result of multiple crafts including papermaking, printing, binding, and engraving — all of which must be respected in the restoration process.

Beyond technique: the artisan mindset
Restoration is an act of responsibility.
