Venetian Mask Making Course in Venice
Where identity becomes form and tradition becomes expression
A course dedicated to the art of Venetian mask making — where craftsmanship, symbolism, and creativity come together.
Guided by master artisans, you will learn how to create and decorate your own authentic mask, exploring one of Venice’s most iconic traditions.
The Course
This course offers a complete journey into the creation of a traditional Venetian mask.
From the preparation of the mould to the final decoration, you will follow each step of the process — understanding how raw materials are transformed into expressive objects.
Working with papier-mâché and traditional techniques, you will create your own mask, guided throughout by expert craftsmen.
Beyond the making process, the course also introduces the cultural and historical significance of masks in Venetian society — where identity, theatre, and anonymity intertwine.
The art behind the technique
Venetian masks are deeply rooted in the history of the Serenissima, where they were used not only during Carnival, but as a social and cultural tool.
They allowed individuals to transcend identity, social class, and convention — creating a space where expression and anonymity coexisted.
Crafted using traditional papier-mâché techniques, each mask is shaped, refined, and decorated by hand.
Forms such as the Bauta or Colombina carry symbolic meaning, while decoration transforms each piece into a unique artistic object.
Today, the art of the mascherari continues to preserve this tradition, balancing heritage with contemporary creativity.
