Retreat with Artisan: Textile Art Through Bobbin Lace & Contemporary Art

Join a Tombolo bobbin lace and textile art retreat in Sicily. Learn from a master artisan and create a contemporary tapestry with a professional artist.

Overview

This retreat is designed for anyone who wishes to learn authentic Italian Tombolo (bobbin lace) and explore how this historic craft can become part of a contemporary artistic process.

Over five days, you will work closely with a master artisan, learning Tombolo step by step — from tools and thread control to tension, patterns, and traditional stitches. As your skills develop, you will create lace elements that go beyond technical exercises and become part of a real artistic project.

Inspired by the idea of craft as collaboration — like the shared textile works of Alighiero Boetti and the cultural legacy of Chiara Vigo — this retreat treats Tombolo as both technique and creative material. Guided by both an artisan and a contemporary artist, you’ll discover how an ancient language of making can evolve into modern artistic expression.

Immersive learning experience

This retreat is conceived as a fully immersive creative journey.

Daily studio sessions combine hands-on technical learning with artistic exploration. You’ll practice Tombolo lace under close guidance, gradually building confidence and precision while producing motifs for the final artwork.

Alongside technique, the contemporary artist guides the collective creative process — from defining the project concept to leading the final assembly of all lace elements into a finished textile piece. Beyond learning a craft, this experience offers time to slow down, reconnect with your hands, and rediscover the pleasure of making in an intimate Sicilian setting.

A personalised experience

This retreat is usually delivered one-to-one, and occasionally in very small groups (1–8 participants), allowing the programme to adapt fully to your level and creative goals.

The master artisan offers personalised technical guidance throughout, while a contemporary artist leads the creative concept of the project — shaping colour, composition, and overall vision. Each participant develops unique lace elements that contribute to a shared artwork, assembled together on the final day. The focus is on learning authentic Tombolo while expressing your own creativity through a collaborative artistic experience.

Destination: Milazzo (Sicily)

The retreat takes place in Milazzo, a historic seaside town in Sicily, Italy.

Based at Feudo San Pietro, home of the Creative Italy School, you’ll work in a peaceful countryside setting just minutes from the sea. Milazzo offers a rare balance of Mediterranean light, rural calm, and cultural depth — an ideal environment for focused creative work and quiet inspiration.
