Sfilato Siciliano Course in Val di Noto

Where structure emerges through subtraction

A course dedicated to Sfilato Siciliano — a refined embroidery technique where threads are removed and reconstructed into precise, geometric compositions.

Guided by expert artisans, you will explore a discipline defined by control, structure, and the transformation of fabric into architectural detail.

The Course

Precision Through Structure.

This course introduces Sfilato as a methodical and highly structured practice.

Rather than building through addition, you will learn to work through subtraction — removing threads from linen and reconstructing them through embroidery.

The process unfolds progressively, from understanding materials and tools to mastering increasingly complex techniques, allowing you to develop both precision and confidence.

The craft behind the technique

Sfilato Siciliano is one of the most refined forms of Italian embroidery, deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of the Iblean region.

Historically, it was an essential element of domestic life — particularly in the preparation of bridal trousseaux — symbolising patience, discipline, and craftsmanship.

Defined by its geometric precision and structured composition, Sfilato transforms fabric into a delicate architectural surface.

Today, it remains a rare and highly specialised technique, preserved through the knowledge of skilled artisans.

Beyond technique: the artisan mindset

Sfilato is a discipline of control and intention.

Every action is deliberate — each thread removed, each stitch placed, contributes to a precise and balanced structure.

Through this process, you learn to work with restraint, where absence becomes form and precision becomes expression.

It is not only about embroidery, but about constructing through subtraction
