Roman Mosaic Course in Val di Noto

Where stone becomes structure and narrative

A course dedicated to the art of Roman mosaic — where natural materials are assembled into enduring compositions rooted in history and architecture.

Set in the Val di Noto, surrounded by some of the most important Roman mosaics in Sicily, this course connects manual practice with cultural discovery.

The Course

Learning Through Material and Time.

This course introduces you to Roman mosaic through a direct and tactile approach.

Working with stone tesserae, you will learn how to cut, shape, and assemble each element — understanding how rhythm, repetition, and structure define the composition.

From your first exercises to the creation of a small mosaic, the process allows you to experience the importance of time, precision, and manual skill.

The course is enriched by visits to extraordinary historical sites, where you will observe Roman mosaics in their original context.

The art behind the technique

Roman mosaic is one of the most enduring forms of artistic expression, used to decorate floors, villas, and public spaces across the Roman world.

Unlike later decorative traditions, Roman mosaics are deeply connected to architecture — designed to be walked upon, lived with, and integrated into daily life.

Made from stone, marble, and natural materials, these mosaics are defined by their durability, structure, and graphic clarity.

In Sicily, masterpieces such as the mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale and Villa del Tellaro represent some of the finest examples of this tradition — offering a direct link between past and present.
