Painting Restoration Course in Florence

Where art is preserved through knowledge and precision

A course dedicated to the conservation and restoration of paintings — where technique, history, and material come together.

Guided by expert restorers, you will learn how to analyze, preserve, and restore artworks, respecting their original integrity while ensuring their continuity over time.

The Course

Understanding Before Restoring.

Painting restoration begins with knowledge.

This course introduces you to the principles of conservation, focusing on the study of the artwork — its materials, structure, author, and historical context — before any intervention.

You will learn how to approach restoration as a thoughtful and informed process, where each action is guided by respect for the original work and its cultural value.

The art behind the technique

Painting restoration developed as a discipline alongside the growing awareness of cultural heritage in Europe.

From the 17th century onwards, manuals began to define methods for preserving paintings and frescoes, aiming to recover their original appearance. The archaeological discoveries of the 18th and 19th centuries further reinforced the importance of conservation.

A key moment in the history of restoration took place in Venice, where Pietro Edwards helped establish a more structured and professional approach to the discipline.

Today, restoration is both a scientific and artisanal practice — combining chemistry, material knowledge, and manual skill to preserve artworks for future generations.

Beyond technique: the artisan mindset

Restoration is an act of responsibility and respect.

Each artwork carries history, meaning, and identity. The role of the restorer is not to recreate, but to preserve — maintaining the authenticity of the work while ensuring its longevity.

This requires patience, precision, and critical judgment — knowing when to intervene and when to leave untouched.

It is not only about technique, but about understanding the value of what you are preserving
