Byzantine Mosaic Course in Palermo
Where fragments become timeless compositions
A course dedicated to the art of mosaic — where stone, glass, and gold are assembled into enduring works of beauty.
Set near Monreale, one of the greatest expressions of Byzantine mosaic in the world, this course immerses you in a tradition that has remained unchanged for centuries.
The Course
Learning Through Tradition and Practice
This course offers a complete introduction to mosaic art through direct experience in an artisan workshop.
Working side by side with a master mosaicist, you will learn how to cut, compose, and assemble tesserae — understanding how each fragment contributes to a larger composition.
The program is structured in progressive levels, allowing you to deepen your skills over time, from foundational techniques to more complex and personal work.
Immersion in the workshop environment is central to the experience, connecting you directly to the rhythm and reality of artisan life.
The art behind the technique
Mosaic is one of the oldest artistic techniques, transmitted through generations with minimal change in materials and methods.
In Sicily, and particularly in Palermo, this tradition reaches one of its highest expressions — where Byzantine influence transformed mosaic into a monumental and spiritual art form.
Glass paste, marble, and gold tesserae are combined to create luminous surfaces that interact with light and space.
This is a craft where precision meets vision — where each small element contributes to a composition designed to last for centuries.
