Retreat with Artisan: Art Retreat: Fresco Painting in Sardinia

Learn the ancient art of mural painting with our traditional Fresco retreat in Sardinia. An art retreat with intensive training on lime-based techniques and classic Italian styles.

Overview

Fresco painting is one of the oldest and most direct forms of artistic expression. Pigment is applied onto wet lime plaster — every gesture must be intentional. There is no correction, no delay. As the surface dries, the colour becomes part of the wall itself. The painting does not sit on the surface: it becomes stone.

This immersive retreat offers a hands-on introduction to fresco painting guided closely by a professional artist. Working with natural pigments, traditional materials, and carefully prepared surfaces, you will explore the essential techniques of this timeless medium.

The experience begins with a short historical and technical introduction before moving directly into practice. You will work on different supports — from tiles and panels to selected stone walls — discovering fresco as a living technique rooted in tradition yet open to contemporary interpretation.

Immersive learning experience

Creative Italy retreats are designed as immersive creative journeys.

This experience invites you to slow down, reconnect with your hands, and rediscover the pleasure of making something truly personal. Learning happens through doing: preparing surfaces, mixing pigments, and working directly with lime plaster under the artist’s guidance.

In addition to studio practice, dedicated excursions allow you to encounter historical frescoes in their original architectural context, offering deeper insight into what these techniques were capable of creating — and how they can still inspire today.

A personalised experience

This retreat is designed around you.

Whether you are an experienced artist or approaching these techniques for the first time, the programme can be adapted to your interests and level. Alongside fresco painting, your experience may be expanded to include Renaissance techniques such as egg tempera, gilding, gesso preparation on panel, and silverpoint drawing.

You may choose to combine methods, deepen your personal research, or develop a specific project you already have in mind. The aim is not replication, but integration: learning traditional techniques in a way that supports and enriches your own artistic voice.

Destination: Bosa
