This course introduces you to Florentine mosaic as both a technical discipline and an artistic practice.
Working with semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, porphyry, jade, and granite, you will learn how to cut, shape, and assemble each element into a cohesive composition.
From design to final polishing, every stage requires attention, control, and sensitivity to the material — transforming raw stone into detailed images of flowers, landscapes, or abstract forms.
The art behind the technique
Florentine mosaic, or pietre dure, originated in Tuscany during the Renaissance under the patronage of the Medici family.
Recognizing the artistic potential of precious stones, the Medici established specialized workshops in Florence, bringing together highly skilled artisans to develop this unique technique.
One of the most important achievements of this tradition is the decoration of the Chapel of the Princes within the Basilica of San Lorenzo — a masterpiece of stone inlay that reflects both technical mastery and artistic vision.
Unlike traditional mosaics, Florentine mosaic does not rely on repetition, but on the careful selection and cutting of each stone to create seamless, painterly compositions.
Today, this craft remains a symbol of Florentine excellence — preserved by a small number of master artisans and workshops, continuing a tradition that combines art, geology, and design.
