A Little History<\/h2>\n

The origins of lace in Italy date back to the 13th century. The two main categories being needle lace (made by hand) and bobbin lace (made using a machine). Venetian lace, also known as Venetian point lace or point de Venise<\/em>, is a type of delicate lace that originated in Venice. The origins of Venetian lace can be traced back to the late 16th century, during the Renaissance period.<\/p>\n

\nVenetian lace quickly gained popularity among the European nobility and aristocracy. It became a symbol of luxury, elegance, and refinement. Venetian lace was highly sought after for clothing, accessories, and home furnishings. The lace was used to embellish garments, tablecloths, curtains, and other textiles. Lace making rose to such prominence in Venetian society, that it was soon a popular pastime of noblewomen, including the wives of some Doges.<\/p>\n

Venice was a major centre of trade, culture, and art during that time. Venice played a vital role in the development of various forms of lace-making. The art of lace-making had already been established in other parts of Europe, but the Venetian artisans added their own unique style and techniques to create what is now known as Venetian lace. This lace was characterised by its fine thread work, intricate patterns, and elaborate designs. These designs often featured floral motifs, and other decorative elements.<\/p>\n

\"\"One of the notable features of Venetian lace was the use of a needle rather than a traditional bobbin to create the lace patterns. This technique allowed for more intricate and detailed designs. Additionally, artisan lace-makers often employed a variety of stitches and techniques, such as punto<\/em> in aria (stitches worked “in the air”) and reticella<\/em> (a form of needle lace).<\/p>\n

Venetian lace production declined in the 18th century due to changing fashion trends and economic factors, but experienced a revival in the 19th century with renewed interest in historical and artistic craftsmanship. Today this traditional handicraft, and the artisans who produce lace, play an important role in the heritage and history of Venice.<\/p>\n

Burano<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You will stay in Burano, one of several islands in the Venice lagoon. Burano lace which was made using only needle and thread, was the height of fashion during the 16th and 17th centuries. In Burano you will discover and experience another unknown side of Venice. From here, you can easily access Murano and the other small islands surrounding Venice, such as San Francesco del Deserto and Torcello. Combined with the learning you will visit an ancient winery and discover its history.<\/p>\n
