Breath-taking, picture-perfect, captivating, enchanting, \u2026. all adjectives that have been used in an attempt to describe the beauty of Sorrento. It is no surprise that Sorrento was a favoured destination for the 18th century Grand Tour, and travellers from around the world have been returning ever since.<\/p>\n

History buffs will be delighted to see evidence of ancient Oscan, Greek and Roman civilizations in Sorrento. To the Romans Sorrento was known as Surrentum or Sirrentum\u00a0which translates as “Land of Sirens”.\u00a0\u00a0Legend has it that the Sirens lived along the Sorrento Coast and one of the most important Roman temples in Sorrento was dedicated to the sirens.<\/p>\n

In modern times Sorrento has been a draw for many great writers and thinkers including Byron, Keats, Dickens, Goethe, and Nietzsche. Those fortunate enough to visit Sorrento will no doubt understand why many find inspiration in this magical place.<\/p>\n

Blessed with ancient citrus trees, views of Mount Vesuvius and blue Mediterranean waters, Sorrento really does appear to be a mythical land, too good to be true.<\/p>\n

Sorrento Inlay<\/h2>\n

Intarsio<\/em> (wood inlay in English) dates back to the 15th century. The art of wood inlay comprises of assembling small pieces of wood, arranged to form patterns, landscapes or figures. Traditional Sorrento intarsia usually depicts local figures or the Sorrento landscape.<\/p>\n

\"\"The process requires the artisan to choose from a variety of different wood for example olive, walnut, chestnut or mahogany. Some artisans dye the wood, often using natural colouring. Artisans are not only responsible for designing the image or pattern, and arranging the pieces of wood to form the desired image, but also use incredible skill and precision to cut the wood. The pieces are glued together, and a varnish or finish is applied.<\/p>\n

Today you can view this technique on the doors of the Sorrento Cathedral and in local chapels. There is a plethora of artisan workshops dotted around Sorrento, and this is where the true creative tradition lives on.<\/p>\n
