Bookbinding course in Florence
Where pages become structure, and knowledge becomes object
A course dedicated to the art of bookbinding — where paper, thread, and material come together to create functional and enduring forms.
Rooted in centuries of tradition, this craft transforms loose pages into coherent, tactile objects designed to last over time.
The Course
Constructing the Book as an Object.
This course introduces you to the process of bookbinding as both a technical and creative discipline.
You will learn how to assemble, sew, and structure a book — understanding how each component contributes to its strength, flexibility, and longevity.
From the creation of covers to decorative techniques, the course combines practical skills with an appreciation for material and form.
Working in an artisan workshop, you will create your own bound object, exploring both traditional methods and contemporary applications.
The craft behind the technique
Bookbinding is the craft that gives form to knowledge.
Originating from early codices, where pages were sewn and protected by rigid covers, it evolved alongside the history of writing, printing, and material innovation.
In Italy, refined techniques emerged — combining parchment, leather, and decorative elements such as gilded patterns.
Beyond its functional role, binding became a form of expression, where structure and decoration coexist.
Today, while industrial methods dominate, artisanal bookbinding preserves a slower, more intentional approach — where each object is constructed to endure.

Working with paper also introduces fragility — teaching care, patience, and respect for materials.
It is not only about making a book, but about creating an object designed to preserve and protect over time.
